The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. Each week a local resident invites us over and lets us in on what makes their neighborhood special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to share your story.

I was pregnant when my fiancé Cameron and I began looking for our first family home. We were living in Beacon Hill at the time and didn’t have a specific area in mind when we started our search. We only knew it had to be a neighborhood where we could envision raising our child. We eventually decided on a new build in Stone Oak that allowed us to pick from a selection of home options by D.R. Horton.

Throughout the construction process, we would often stop by to see the progress. It’s fun to look back at pictures from those visits because you can see the home coming together and my baby bump getting bigger. Construction wrapped up just as I was nearing the end of my pregnancy, and a week before our daughter Emerson was born, we moved in. The timing was perfect.

Our little family, which includes our two dogs Chase and Tellie, has settled into the home nicely. My favorite feature has to be the backyard. It’s the biggest backyard I’ve ever had. The dogs love having so much room to run around and I can’t wait to put a playground in for Emerson when she’s older.

Though being a new mom leaves me little time to explore, Cameron and I enjoy walking around the neighborhood pushing Emerson in her stroller. We always bump into neighbors out for a stroll or walking their dogs. We even learned that two former classmates of mine from Laredo live nearby.

  • Garza enjoys taking time in the mornings to get coffee at Appolo's drive thru coffee shop.
  • Garza and her fiancé moved into their new home a week before their newborn daughter Emerson was born.
  • Garza lives with her fiancé, four-month-old daughter and their two dogs, Tellie and Chase in their newly constructed home.
  • Taking her four-month-old daughter Emerson for strolls around the neighborhood is one of Garza's favorite pastimes.

And there are plenty of opportunities to meet neighbors at one of the many community activities organized by the homeowners association. Whether it’s a zumba class, bingo or poker night, or bringing out food trucks, there’s always something going on. Recently the HOA hosted a local vendor fair featuring San Antonio vendors selling everything from clothing to jewelry to plants and dog treats.

We love that Stone Oak is a family-oriented neighborhood with plenty of young families like ours. You’ll often find families cooling off in the neighborhood pool and splash pad or having some playtime with their dogs at the big dog park. I look forward to enjoying these things with my daughter when she’s older.

Stone Oak feels like its own little town where we have everything we need. It’s just a quick drive to stores like H-E-B, Target, Home Goods, and Hobby Lobby. We also have a lot of great local businesses. Apollo’s Coffee Shop has quickly become my favorite spot for coffee and we enjoy breakfast tacos from Los Arcos on weekends. My fiancé is from Michigan and when his dad came to visit recently he fell in love with the breakfast tacos here. It’s something we sometimes take for granted living in a city with so much delicious Mexican food. My favorite restaurant for Mexican food and drinks in the neighborhood is El Mirasol. I recommend their enchiladas.

My parents still live in Laredo, but they visit us quite often, especially now that Emerson is here. I like taking them around to my favorite neighborhood spots and also to new restaurants around San Antonio. When I was growing up in Laredo, San Antonio was the big city where we would go for better shopping and dining options. Now that I live here I realize there’s so much more to the city. I’m grateful to be able to call San Antonio home and excited for my daughter to grow up in Stone Oak.
