In 2023, readers took us all over the city, inviting us out to places like East Pyron, Kingsborough Ridge, Oakland Estates and Alta Vista. And our two most-read features came from outside of San Antonio — in Helotes and Rio Medina.
As we ring in the new year, we look back at the neighborhoods we got to know in 2023.
Local university students gave us a glimpse of campus life, with Patrice Campbell writing about the programming she organizes as vice president of the Black Student Union at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, Jayden Mendez describing her favorite spots to study at St. Mary’s University and Angelica Cordero crediting her aunt for inspiring her to join a volunteer group at the University of Texas at San Antonio.
Melissa Ludwig wrote about the power of community, remembering how her Harmony Hill neighbors came together to provide support and resources during the pandemic and Winter Storm Uri.
Neighbors also came together to speak up for and protect their neighborhoods. In Collins Garden, Romulo Spiller has worked with his neighborhood association to address issues like 18-wheelers parked in the neighborhood and disruptions from passing trains blowing their horns.
In Mockingbird Hill, Warren Young started a petition to stop the sale of the Denman Estate to Dallas developers planning to build condominiums. He and his neighbors worked with then-Councilman Art Hall to reach a compromise with the entities that owned the property in which the city purchased the land to establish the area as a park, while still allowing them to use the buildings.
“Thanks to our neighbors coming together and attending many, many city council meetings, we have Denman Estate Park today,” wrote Young.
