Cocktail enthusiasts from around the world will gather from Jan. 14-17 for tastings, parties, and seminars of the San Antonio Cocktail Conference. Every year the conference creates a new signature cocktail to commemorate the festivities. This year’s cocktail is the “Beso de Agave,” (“Agave Kiss”) a southwestern influenced drink.
“It’s smoky and spicy with big aggressive flavors, but is still a little refreshing,” said Bohanan’s Bar Manager Jordan Corney.
Those big flavors come from Mezcal, a distilled alcohol from the agave plant that brings a distinct smoky flavor to the drink. The flavor doesn’t agree with everyone – some people prefer the taste of traditional tequila.
“The Mezcal may cause the drink to be polarizing for some cocktail drinkers, but the other ingredients make it a good entry-level Mezcal drink,” Corney said. “I’m interested to see how margarita drinkers will feel about it.”
The Cocktail Conference officially starts Thursday, Jan. 14 with an opening party at 7 p.m. at the Majestic Theatre, but several paired dinners and industry events are planned in the days leading up to the four-day conference.
The recipe is as follows:
- 1 oz. Milagro Reposado
- 1 oz. Montelobos
- 1 1/2 oz. pineapple juice
- 3/4 oz. fresh lime juice
- Barspoon of agave nectar
- Shake well with ice
- Add a splash of ginger beer
- Floater of Ancho Reyes
- Mint sprig, for Garnish
