Hulu, one of the most sought-after video-on-demand subscription services in the country, has chosen San Antonio for its new Viewer Experience Headquarters, Mayor Ivy Taylor’s office announced Wednesday.
The move could bring up to 500 new positions to the city starting this fall, including call center, tech support, management, and software engineering jobs.
“When I led a delegation to California a few weeks ago, this is exactly the outcome we were working toward,” Taylor said. “I understand there are still a few hurdles to cross, but I am excited that Hulu has selected San Antonio for its next major investment.”
In early March, Taylor and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, San Antonio Economic Development Foundation President and CEO Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, and tech industry leaders traveled to Los Angeles to meet with Hulu executives. Their mission was to win the Hulu site over the other finalist, Albuquerque, N.M.
The company, based in Santa Monica, Calif., was founded in 2008 and today boasts more than 12 million subscribers, more than 400 content partners, and 2,000 advertisers. Media veteran Mike Hopkins is CEO.
According to its website, Hulu is the only subscription streaming service that offers current-season content from the largest U.S. broadcast networks. Its original content includes shows like The Mindy Project, The Path, 11.22.63, Difficult People, the Golden Globe® nominated comedy series Casual, and the upcoming The Handmaid’s Tale, Future Man, and The Looming Tower.
Two weeks ago, Hulu announced a deal with Telemundo and Sony Pictures Television that will add hundreds of episodes of popular telenovelas, Pedro Almodóvar films, and Spanish-language programming from Telemundo to the streaming service for the first time.
