Amid a holiday shipping surge, Amazon announced Tuesday it plans to open two new fulfillment centers and a new delivery station in San Antonio.
Expected to open over the next two years, the new 1 million-square-foot fulfillment center for processing bulky and large items, a robotics fulfillment center, and a new delivery station will bring 1,500 jobs to the area.
“We’re thrilled to be able to continue our growth throughout the San Antonio area,” stated Alicia Boler Davis, Amazon’s vice president of global customer fulfillment. “Amazon is a great place to work with highly competitive pay, benefits from day one, and training programs for in-demand careers.”
The largest fulfillment center will be located on the far West Side of San Antonio at 10360 U.S. Highway 90 near Loop 1604. Another slightly smaller center, at roughly 750,000-square-feet, will be located on the far East Side at 6806 Cal Turner Dr.
Amazon currently operates large-scale fulfillment warehouses in Schertz, San Marcos, and smaller delivery operation facilities across San Antonio. Amazon warehouse jobs in San Antonio pay just over $13 an hour, according to data collected by the job search site Indeed.
In addition to the new fulfillment centers to be built in San Antonio, Amazon is planning a 350,000-square-foot delivery station located at 8210 Aviation Landing on the Brooks campus on the South Side.
Delivery stations support “the last mile” of Amazon’s order fulfillment process. Packages are transported to delivery stations from Amazon fulfillment and sorting centers and then loaded into vehicles for delivery to customers.
The delivery station, which is expected to open in 2021, will employ hundreds in full- and part-time jobs that pay $15 an hour plus benefits, according to Amazon. The company stated the station will also offer opportunities for contract drivers with its Amazon Flex program.
“San Antonio’s diverse industries, skilled workforce, and sustainable infrastructure make us resilient and we are ready to support significant growth from tech-focused companies like Amazon,” Mayor Ron Nirenberg said in a prepared statement.
“We are thrilled to work closely with Amazon to support their growing presence in our region,” said Jenna Saucedo-Herrera, president and CEO of the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation. “Together, these three new facilities in San Antonio will occupy more than 2 million square feet and employ thousands of San Antonians who will work to deliver the great Prime service many have come to rely on.”
Gov. Greg Abbott also welcomed the e-commerce giant’s expansion in the state.
“In what continues to be a strong partnership between Amazon and Texas, these facilities will integrate state-of-the-art robotics working alongside Amazon associates to serve customers throughout the region.”
Since early December, Amazon has announced new fulfillment centers are planned for Oklahoma City; Missouri City, Texas; North Little Rock, Arkansas; and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. In Texas, the shopping super-site has created more than 43,000 jobs in the last 10 years and invested nearly $17 billion across the state through infrastructure and workforce compensation.
