North East Independent School District board trustees selected a longtime educator to fill a vacant board seat Monday night, more than a month after trustee Joseph Treviño resigned.

Omar Leos, who is Harlandale ISD’s fine arts coordinator, will join the board and represent District 3, which covers the southwestern part of the district and includes LEE High School.

Leos, 45, started his education career as a theater teacher in Southwest ISD. He also worked as the coordinator for visual and theatre arts in San Antonio ISD.

“There were many great applicants but ultimately we feel that Mr. Leos is the best person to fill the District 3 seat,” board President Shannon Grona said, acknowledging Leos’ background as an educator.

Omar Leos, the fine arts coordinator for Harlandale ISD, is appointed to the North East ISD board.

Treviño stepped down from the board in late September, citing medical issues. Before his resignation, his fellow trustees took the extraordinary step of censuring him twice, banning him from attending district events or campuses because of behavior they said was inappropriate for a trustee.

Leos will serve until the next regular trustee election, scheduled for 2020.

Seven District 3 residents applied for the open board seat. Applicants included Leos, Amy Mayo McLin, Christopher Ashok Mammen, Dolores Serna, Justin Hill, Lucy Reyna, and Melissa Lopez.
