Ahead of the November midterm elections, the Rivard Report invited invested parties to provide commentaries and share their points of view with voters. All commentaries are presented in original form with basic editing and fact-checking.
The Bexar County District Attorney’s Office came under scrutiny last year when local attorney Mark Stevens filed a complaint after current DA Nico LaHood allegedly threatened to destroy the legal practice of defense lawyer Joe Gonzales. Gonzales, who like LaHood is a Democrat, went on to decisively defeat LaHood in the primary and open the door for new blood in what was considered a tainted DA’s office.
Gonzales and Republican Tylden Shaeffer both served as Bexar County prosecutors before moving into private practice. They both want to revamp the image of the District Attorney’s Office, and they both believe in the death penalty – though they differ on when it should be considered.
Click on the banners below to read Shaeffer and Gonzales’ arguments for why they should be Bexar County’s next district attorney.

Shaffer looks too much live Kavanaugh tome. Sqeeky clean Bible Thumper. Beware!
This is probably the dumbest comment I’ve ever seen on here…Judging people because of the way they look. I’m scared on how you choose people who run for office.
Bill – do you also judge people by the color of the their skin, or where or whether they go to church, or whom they choose to marry? It’s pathetic people like you who have given us the broken political process we have. Read the two profiles. Make an informed vote. Don’t be an ignoramus and judge a book by its cover.
Gonzales’ own nephew is proof that rehabilitative justice DOES NOT WORK.
