Texas House District 121 has become a focal point in this election because it’s the seat vacated by Speaker of the House Joe Straus, who announced last year that he would not be seeking re-election.
Straus is well-liked by both Democrats and Republicans, and filling the role he’s held since 2005 in an important part of the city that includes Alamo Heights, Olmos Park, Terrell Hills, and northeast San Antonio will not be easy.
Celina Montoya is the first Democratic challenger in this district since 2005, and Steve Allison earned the outgoing speaker’s endorsement ahead of his May runoff win against two-time Straus opponent Matt Beebe. Neither Montoya nor Allison has ever held office, but both have established roots as business and education figures in the community.
