Wordsmith Catherine “Jazz Cat” Lee first began exploring poetry with jazz musicians at Studio Red Top, Inc., a loft space she organized in Boston, Mass. in 1978. Events she produced included joint musical readings with her mentor, the late Beat poet Ted Joans, in 1986-87. In San Antonio since 2006, Cat sits in “on poem” at jam sessions and visits many music-free literary events. She’s also been a guest, co-host and producer of jazz poetry special broadcasts on KRTU-FM for six years, most recently “Poetricity” in April 2014. Her jazz poetry cinepoem collaborations, archival Studio Red Top videos, and a PSA she produced to recruit mentors for Beacon Hill Elementary School are available at her video space. On Facebook, Cat posts musings about the best of jazz poetry at Jazz Ovation Inn. Cat supports herself with nonprofit grantwriting; Bihl Haus Arts is among her clients.
