Following a high-profile inspection of the Dilley detention facility in South Texas earlier this week, a delegation of House Democrats joined San Antonio leaders at City Hall to call for the closure of the center located an hour southwest of San Antonio.

While national headlines focused on the release of two teenage musicians from the facility, lawmakers returned with a broader report on the conditions facing hundreds of others.

In this audio report, U.S. Reps. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., and Katherine Clark, D-Mass., describe a system in “despair,” citing instances of pregnant women and young children lacking basic medical attention.

U.S. Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-San Antonio) has called for the total closure of the facility, which he refers to as a “trailer prison.” The visit underscored a growing push for oversight as the Department of Homeland Security looks to expand detention footprints in the region.
