Nine positions on the Edwards Aquifer Authority’s board of directors were up for reelection this year, but just one drew a contested race.

Carol Patterson, who represents part of Bexar County, was one of the board’s inaugural elected members three decades ago.

The Edwards Aquifer Authority is the water management agency tasked with protecting the Edwards Aquifer system, and Patterson served on the predecessor organization before its creation.

She was among three members who fought the state to secure elected board positions instead of appointed.

District 1 starts in Alamo Heights and runs north to Timberwood Park. Patterson faces a challenge from Joey Groff, who did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The 17-member board includes 15 elected members who represent specific geographic regions of the eight-county jurisdiction. They serve staggered, four-year terms — and last cycle none of the seats drew a contested race.
