USAA is making room in its downtown San Antonio office tower for 400 employees, according to a company spokesman.

USAA Real Estate Company will begin construction on floors 5, 6, 7, and 12 of One Riverwalk Center later this year. Move-in to the building at North St. Mary’s and Convent streets is slated for late 2018.

“Once complete, USAA will occupy eight floors and have more than 600 employees in the 18-story tower,” stated Matthew Hartwig, USAA communications director, in an email. “The exact roles and mix of employees moving downtown are still to be determined.”

Hartwig declined to identify the floors’ previous tenants.

The San Antonio-based banking, insurance and financial services company started moving employees into the downtown office two years after its real estate company purchased the building in 2013. USAA’s headquarters are located outside Loop 410 off Fredericksburg Road.

“These moves create additional capacity in the home office to support USAA’s ongoing growth strategy,” Hartwig stated. “USAA is seeking to hire talented people from across the country, many with technical skills important to developing the tools and services our members will need.”

Employees working in IT and insurance moved to new office space at the Vista Corporate Center and to WestRidge II at La Cantera earlier this year.

USAA Real Estate acquired the 28-story Bank of America Plaza, located across Convent Street from One Riverwalk Center, earlier this summer.

More than 19,000 people in the San Antonio area work for USAA, which employs more than 32,000 worldwide, according to a company statement. The company serves more than 12 million members, mostly from the military community.
