The Briscoe Western Art Museum has launched a new, free event called “Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe” that offers educational activities about the American West. The Briscoe will open its doors to the community for film screenings, concerts, gallery talks, dance performances and lectures every Tuesday from 4-9 p.m. throughout the summer months until Sep. 22.
The first event tonight will showcase the San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble, an ancient world music group that performs with traditional instruments from the Middle East, Europe, and North and South America.
The Briscoe Western Art Museum, named for the former Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr. and his wife Janey Slaughter Briscoe, is home to a vast array of exhibits that provide a passageway into the rich history of Texas and the West. The museum sits on the banks of the San Antonio River Walk adjacent to La Villita and the Arneson River Theatre. The museum’s campus includes the former art deco San Antonio Public Library building, the new Jack Guenther Pavilion, and the outdoor McNutt Courtyard and Sculpture Garden.
The Briscoe Museum uses a mix of mediums such as paintings, sculptures and photography to tell the story of the American West and the generations of people who migrated to the area over the centuries. The Briscoe houses artifacts with deep historical ties to the area like Santa Anna’s sword, Pancho Villa’s saddle, and a Wells Fargo mail stagecoach.
The Briscoe Museum’s free program coincides with VIA Metropolitan Transit’s “The E” free downtown bus route and the City’s free downtown Tuesday parking.

- July 14: Rhythm Rangers – Cowboy Band
- July 21: Comedic West Movie Night – “Three Amigos!”
- July 28: Guadalupe Cultural Arts – Rancheros
- August 4: Book Club at 5:30 p.m.; Gallery Talk: “Photographs of the West” at 6:30 p.m.
- August 11: YOSA: Pops Ensemble
- August 18: Comedic West Movie Night – “Rango”
- August 25: Guadalupe Cultural Arts – Flamenco Experience
- September 1: Book Club at 5:30 p.m.; Gallery Talk: “Trade in New Spain” at 6:30 p.m.
- September 8: Matt Dunne – Spanish Guitar
- September 15: Distinguished Lecture Series: “Voices of the West”
- September 22: Guadalupe Cultural Arts – Return of Flamenco
All programs are free, except lecture series are $10 for the public and free for members.
