The Briscoe Western Art Museum will present THAT DAY: Pictures in the American West from renowned author and photographer Laura Wilson, showcasing more than three decades of images from Texas and the Western United States. This exhibition of 84 photographs runs from Sept. 15 through Dec. 10 and is free with museum admission. The show highlights worlds that are framed equally by beauty and violence, reflecting Wilson’s challenge to the traditional views and stereotypes of the region. The exhibit is part of FOTOSEPTIEMBRE USA.
A former assistant to famed fashion photographer Richard Avedon, Wilson has published her work to wide acclaim over the past 25 years. In the Briscoe’s fall exhibition, her subjects range from legendary West Texas cattle ranches to impoverished border camps to lavish Laredo cotillions. Also featured are compelling portraits of artists who are associated with the region, including Donald Judd, Harry Dean Stanton, and Sam Shepard.
The unforgettable images in THAT DAY tell sharply drawn stories of the people and places that have shaped, and continue to shape, the nation’s most dynamic and unyielding land. Text from Wilson’s field journals accompany the photographs, recalling her personal experiences behind the camera at the moment the images were captured. With her keen eye for detail, Wilson offers an unexpected vision of the West – a topic of enduring fascination.

The famed photographer and author will discuss details behind her current exhibition at the Briscoe, her time working with legendary photographer Richard Avedon, and the inspirations that have driven her work and career. A book signing immediately follows with hardcover copies of THAT DAY available for purchase.
Programming for THAT DAY also includes a mobile app tour, which contains exclusive content. In addition, the Briscoe will present guided exhibition tours, gallery talks, and a screening of the PBS documentary, Las Marthas: Mexican American Debutante Balls, with a post-screening discussion facilitated by Trinity University’s Dr. Norma Cantú exploring the film and cultural tradition of debutantes in Laredo – a topic that Wilson explores in several images included in THAT DAY.
