Great opportunities and tough problems have been presented to San Antonio over the years and undoubtedly, more will come. Ed Kelley has faced many of those significant community issues with a steady energy and an intense desire to do it right.

He now steps down from his latest challenge, as a member of the CPS Energy board of trustees, where he has served in all its leadership positions. Many of us tend to focus on the last headline, but Kelley’s role goes back several years to his recruitment of key CPS Energy leadership. Those visionaries set a course for a lower carbon energy generation still recognized nationally and statewide. His sustained focus on financial stability has produced positive contributions to the City of San Antonio’s budget by CPS Energy as well as bond ratings that resulted in lower borrowing costs.

Kelley has been both a leader and a team player as circumstances required. When the City of San Antonio needed to revise its one-stop permit department for individuals and companies, he led the year-long task force to make the process more efficient and accessible to the public. When the Economic Development Foundation wanted leadership, Kelley chaired the foundation’s effort, attracting new employers and jobs to San Antonio. He followed suit when he chaired the dynamic Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce in spite of suffering a life-threatening accident.

Beyond his public service, Kelley has impacted San Antonio as a key advisor in the development of the Pearl. The Pearl still receives national and international acclaim and has indelibly improved San Antonio. Likewise, his leadership at USAA Real Estate resulted in the creation of the local Six Flags Fiesta Texas amusement park and the La Cantera complex.

We thank Kelley for his many contributions our community resulting in job growth, job diversity, local government financial stability and an improved quality of life. We all look forward to his future accomplishments and honor his selfless service.
