This might be the sweetest mashup of the summer – literally.
For a limited time, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts will feature Big Red Kreme-filled doughnuts at select stores in Texas. Production and sales started statewide on June 17.
The donut maker famous for its glazed sinkers has partnered with the soft drink maker to offer the Big Red doughnut at its Texas stores on Sundays this summer.
Though the concept was first sampled here in San Antonio at the 8th Annual Big Red & Barbacoa Festival in March, fans of that combo should know the doughnuts are topped with bright red icing and sprinkles – not a side of tangy barbacoa in sight.
But, like the neon sign says, get ’em while they’re “hot now.”
The doughnuts are only available through Sept. 2 at these four spots in San Antonio – 12328 Interstate 10 W., 1117 N. Loop 1604 E., 2703 S.E. Military Dr., and 8815 Potranco Rd. – and in Austin, San Marcos, Laredo, and McAllen.
Absent from that list is Waco, where Big Red was created in 1937 and is produced to this day.
One final note: There are 63 grams of sugar in a can of Big Red, 10 grams in an Original Glazed Doughnut, and 22 grams in the Kreme-filled.
