The holidays are quickly approaching, and with each major holiday comes a bunch of food that is delicious, but often rich and heavy. One way to alleviate extra pounds or feelings of guilt is to run a 5K – for your own health or for that of a loved one.
Inspire others to stay in shape, challenge yourself for a cause by representing a charity, and motivate the people in your office to come with you. Best part: It’s fun.
Here are some forthcoming running events where you can participate in 5K, 10K, half marathon, full marathon races, or any combination of the four.
2016 Corner Store Country Run 5K
At the Freeman Coliseum on Saturday Nov. 12, Corner Store is hosting the 3rd annual Country Run 5K, a farm-themed run lined with hay bales, tractors, and inflatable cows and pigs. The run provides a family-friendly atmosphere that is also stroller friendly. All of the proceeds generated from the race will benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Antonio.

Shamrock Series 5K
Before watching the Notre Dame football team takes the field to face Army at the Alamodome, run a 5K through downtown San Antonio on Saturday Nov. 12 at 7:30 a.m. The course starts and ends at Maverick Park.

Santa Antonio 5K Walk/Run
Ever run a 5k in a Santa suit? Well a bunch of people who do are going to meet at Sunset Station on Nov. 27. If you’ve never done it, consider it for a good cause and a good sweat. The 6th Annual Original Santa Antonio 5K Walk/Run raises money for cancer research at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The first 1,500 people to register will be guaranteed a Santa suit to wear. All others must bring their own.

Humana Rock ‘N’ Roll San Antonio
This is the 18th year for the Rock ‘N’ Roll marathon, which has the largest participation rate nationally. In San Antonio, it will take place on Dec. 3-4. Runners can chose from the half, marathon, 5K, or 10K course. Each race starts at La Villita and runs past most of the city’s downtown landmarks. Turkey Trot 4 Tots 5k
Feel better about that second helping of turkey, dressing, and pie by running a 5K the morning of Thanksgiving, Nov. 24. The race raises money for Marines Toys For Tots, which provides wrapped Christmas presents for children in need. The run kicks off at 8 a.m. at Bluebonnet Palace in Selma, Texas. Don’t be a turkey and bring a toy.

4th Annual ILLUMINATIONS Night Time Half
Run through illuminated pathways at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa on Dec. 17. It’s the only one you can sleep in for with a kickoff time at 5:30 p.m. Either run a 5K or a 10K as you criss-cross the hotel on trails lined with irradiating lights. Proceeds benefit Mobile Loaves and Fishes and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in their mission to feed the hungry.
