The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. Each week a local resident invites us over and lets us in on what makes their neighborhood special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to share your story. If your story is selected and published, you will receive a $250 stipend.
I’ve always loved the Shavano Park area and after graduating from the University of the Incarnate Word I decided to move here. Now having lived here for over two years, I’m obsessed.
The neighborhood strikes the perfect balance between having a quiet, suburban lifestyle and the hustle and bustle of city life. Living here means enjoying peaceful days with the added benefit of nearby conveniences that cater to everyday needs thanks to the community’s proximity to major highways that give us access to shopping centers, dining options, and entertainment at The Rim and La Cantera.

I work from home which means being cooped up inside all day. That’s why I make it my mission to go outside and get my 10,000 steps in. The Shavano Park area offers well-maintained walking paths that wind through scenic landscapes, allowing people to enjoy leisurely strolls or invigorating jogs in a tranquil setting. These paths are not only perfect for exercise but also for connecting with neighbors or simply appreciating the natural beauty of the surroundings.
When I first moved into the area, I met many lovely people on the trails who gave me insight into the best paths and recommended some great coffee and food spots. Now I frequently run into the regulars and we chit-chat for a bit about what’s going on in our lives.
In addition to its picturesque trails, Shavano Park is home to a selection of charming local coffee shops, including my favorites, Merit Coffee and Classic Rock Coffee. These cozy spots always provide a welcoming atmosphere, which makes my day that much better. The combination of accessible walking paths and inviting coffee shops enhances the sense of community in Shavano Park.

The neighborhood’s strong sense of community is evident in the well-maintained public spaces, engaging local events and the overall atmosphere of neighborly support. Every Sunday, there is the Shavano Park Farmers Market. It’s always fun getting to support the local vendors. My apartment complex hosts several food trucks once or twice a month, giving me a chance to connect with my neighbors and support local food trucks.
Living in Shavano Park is a truly enriching experience, and I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. It has everything I prioritize: a tranquil atmosphere, ample opportunities for outdoor activities, a tight-knit community, a sense of safety and easy access to a range of essential amenities such as shopping, dining and entertainment.
Overall, Shavano Park’s blend of natural beauty, convenient amenities, strong community ties and excellent local services makes it a desirable place to live. I am glad to call it my home.
