For First Friday, head to Un Grito gallery upstairs at the Blue Star Arts Complex for Albert Alvarez’s The 12 Links of Dependent Origination, a rare show of original drawings by this incisive local artist.
And stick around Blue Star for the Novel Ideas Art Book Fair at the Contemporary, featuring art book publishers and artists from around the nation and close to home, including Mark Menjivar, Aztlan Libre Press and hand-embroidered books by Candace Hicks. The event takes place Friday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. Xelena Gonzalez and Jose Sotel Yamasaki will present on their new Lotería Remedios oracle cards at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
For the culinarily-minded, Panzones Lonches will pop up Monday evening at Roadmap Brewing, offering deliciously prepared Doritos preparados and Conchitas preparadas, among other tasty treats. It’s also Roadmap’s monthly movie night, featuring Heavyweights at 6 p.m. and Dodgeball at 8 p.m.
On Monday night, take a trip back in time to 1984 at the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Park North for Jim Jarmusch’s minimalist cult hit Stranger Than Paradise at 9:30 p.m. The black-and-white movie has been praised for its “delicate humor and dramatic nonchalance.”
