San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!) began its life saving work as a reaction to a devastating situation in our backyard where thousands – 19,458 in 2011 to be exact – of dogs and cats were euthanized at the City’s shelter. In 2012 SAPA! started saving the lives of animals at the City shelter who were kenneled, awaiting euthanasia. In five years, SAPA! has saved more than 33,000 dogs and cats who had no hope of survival. San Antonio now consistently realizes a save-rate in the eightieth percentile, some months at 90%.
The SAPA! model saves dogs and cats no one else will help; puppies with parvo, orphaned kittens too young to survive without a mother, dogs considered undesirable because of their size or physical characteristics as well as thousands more with serious medical conditions after being hit by cars or abandoned on the street.
Every day we hear the question, “How can I help?” We all want to end the practice of euthanasia because of overcrowding. We want to see a day when no dog or cat is at risk of losing its life because there are simply too many more coming in the shelter doors.
So, what can you do?
There are several ways to get involved with SAPA! and we hope you will visit our website to see opportunities to volunteer, foster and get involved. Today, we ask that you join our Guardian Monthly Giving Program to support the programming and treatment vital to saving lives.
SAPA! treats around 500 dogs with heartworms every year who are just like Courage, a puppy who was saved on Dec. 28, 2016. Each treatment costs $150.
SAPA! helps approximately 260 dogs who, like Courage, have dental needs. The average cost for care is $175.
About 150 dogs have orthopedic conditions requiring surgery. Orthopedic surgeries average $900 per animal.
At least 1,000 kittens are orphaned and require neonatal, around-the-clock care. The cost to care for each kitten is around $225.
More than 500 puppies with parvo are saved every year. Treatment, medical supplies and trained staff costs more than $500 per puppy.
San Antonio animals need our help. By joining our monthly giving program, you become a part of the solution. Every dollar will save lives – no gift is too small. If everyone who asked us what they can do to help, acts today to become a part of our giving program, dogs like Courage can continue to have hope.
