Community members expressed a combination of shock, relief and disappointment in the 24 hours after San Antonio Independent School District officials released a comprehensive and somewhat confusing study on downsizing the district.

Threaded throughout seven YouTube videos and a 176-page document were the most consequential actions recommended by the district — 19 school closures, mostly occurring in the 2024-25 school year. No final decisions have been made, and won’t be until another round of community meetings and a vote by the board in November.

Each school was given a profile — with an overview of its location, grades, enrollment, poverty, district trustee and high school feeder pattern. Recommendations for actions were also included on the documents, which are available on the district’s website.

The decision for which schools should close was made based on three primary criteria: enrollment, facility usage and facility cost per pupil, as well as contextual criteria, which included grade-level configuration, investments in the facility and “other regional factors.”
