U.S. Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-McAllen) is an attorney who was first elected to Congress since 2017. The Corpus Christie native dropped out of high school, but later studied banking and aviation administration before getting a law degree and going into private practice.
Gonzalez previously represented Texas’ 15th Congressional District for three terms. He self-funded a campaign to succeed retiring U.S. Rep. Rubén Hinojosa (D-Mercedes) and defeated a more seasoned Democrat in the primary in 2016. When the congressional districts were redrawn after the 2020 Census, Gonzalez moved over to the 34th, which was considered an easier race. Gonzalez serves on the Financial Services Committee and co-chairs the moderate Blue Dog Coalition.
