Pre-K 4 SA, the City of San Antonio’s preschool program, has temporarily closed its East Education Center after four staff members and one child who were at the center last week tested positive for the coronavirus.
Immediately after receiving notification of the confirmed cases, the prekindergarten program identified children and staff needing to quarantine, conducted contact tracing, and cleaned and disinfected the building, the City of San Antonio said in a press release.
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are closing the Pre-K 4 SA East Education center and transitioning all classes to remote learning effective [immediately],” Pre-K 4 SA CEO Sarah Baray said.
All East Education Center staff were tested Sunday, with no additional staff testing positive, the City said in a separate press release Monday. All children who were in classrooms with a staff member who had tested positive also were tested Monday, with results anticipated on Tuesday.
“We are happy to learn that no additional staff have tested positive and are hopeful the same will be true for children,” Baray said. “We will continue to consult with Metro Health as we work through our protocols designed to keep children, families, and staff safe.”
The East Education Center, located at 5230 Eisenhauer Rd., has been cleaned and disinfected by the center’s custodial team, which is trained to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the City said.
Program officials are working closely with Metro Health to determine when it is safe for children and staff to return for on-site learning, according to City staff. After receiving the additional test results Tuesday, Pre-K 4 SA will determine next steps based on that information.
Pre-K 4 SA offers full-day pre-kindergarten for approximately 2,000 4-year-olds living in San Antonio at four education centers across the city.
