American astrophysicist, cosmologist, and author Neil deGrasse Tyson will return to San Antonio – with fresh material – for a show at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 19, 2017. This might seem like early notice, but tickets to the event are expected to go quickly once they go on sale this week.
As a pivotal figurehead in the world of science news and a certified pop culture idol, Tyson gives entertaining and intriguing talks and performances all over the country. His lecture at the Tobin, titled “The Cosmic Perspective,” will focus on the idea that there is no view of the world as emotionally potent as the one granted by a cosmic perspective; it’s one that sees Earth as a planet in a vast empty universe. It profoundly influences what we think and feel about science, culture, politics, and life itself.
His lecture at the Tobin will be at 7:30 p.m. inside the H-E-B Performance Hall. Tickets, which are $76.50 and $89.50, go on sale Friday, June 3 at 10 a.m., and can be purchased online or via phone at 210-223-8624. VIP Tickets are $250 and include premium seating, an autographed poster, and a meet and greet with Tyson.
Patrons also can buy tickets at the Tobin Center Box Office, located at 100 Auditorium Circle, which is open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
Tyson’s Tobin performance won’t be his first in San Antonio.
“The last time Tyson performed at the Tobin was June 16, 2015” said Kelley Kendall, press and promotions coordinator for the Tobin. “It was a sold out show and was even streamed live in our smaller theater, the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater.”
Last year’s show, titled “An Evening with Neil deGrasse Tyson,” was an entertaining and enlightening review of all the science that our favorite movies got wrong, and some of the stuff they got right. It incorporates recent box office hits like Star Wars, Frozen, and The Martian, as well as some classics that you may not have thought about in a scientific way.
Tyson recently delivered the keynote address for H-E-B’s Excellence in Education Awards ceremony on May 13 at La Cantera Hill Country Resort. During the event, he encouraged educators to inspire students to develop a love of learning.

Tyson is an accomplished scholar, with a B.A. in Physics from Harvard University, a PhD in astrophysics from Columbia University, 19 honorary doctorates and numerous honors in astrophysics. Despite his accolades, he is known for making difficult concepts accessible and intriguing to the general public. His canny humor and personality have led to appearances on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report.
Tyson garnered much international attention for his roles as executive editor, narrator, and host of the television series Cosmos: A SpaceTime Odyssey, which won four Emmy Awards and concluded in June 2014. Over his career, he has written more than 10 books, including a memoir titled The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist. Many of Tyson’s publications have been the basis for several documentaries on NOVA ScienceNow, an award-winning PBS series.
In 2016, Tyson was chosen to serve on NASA‘s advisory council, which focuses on accommodating NASA’s ambition into a restricted budget. In addition, he is a recipient of the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest award given to a non-government citizen.
Tyson is the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and a research associate of the Department of Astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History. He remains a popular TV science expert and has more than 5.2 million followers on Twitter.
