Ivalis Meza Gonzalez, chief of staff for Mayor Ron Nirenberg, will announce her candidacy for Bexar County judge on Saturday morning.

“Our governments need to work hand-in-hand to ensure that we’re delivering the most for every county resident — whether you live in San Antonio or our surrounding municipalities and towns,” Meza Gonzalez said in a statement Friday. “I look forward to having many conversations about the future of Bexar County and what we can accomplish.”

Meza Gonzalez has served as Nirenberg’s chief of staff since early 2020 and was previously his director of policy and public engagement. She said that she was considering a run for county judge in November.

Meza Gonzalez will face state Rep. Ina Minjarez and former Bexar County District Judge Peter Sakai on the March primary ballot for the Democratic nomination. Ed Garza, former San Antonio mayor, is also considering a run for county judge as a Democrat.

Meza Gonzalez is the daughter of influential Democratic organizer Choco Meza, who died in 2016. Growing up in a politically-engaged family shaped her trajectory, she said.

“My parents’ passion, that spirit, has been a driving force for how I’ve approached my life, and now, my service,” she said Friday. “From working at the San Antonio River Authority and eventually the mayor’s office — all I have ever wanted to do was serve the community that has given so much to me and my family.”

She also said in November that she would hope to continue current Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff’s work, if elected. In October, Wolff confirmed he would not run for a sixth term. She pointed to her time with Nirenberg’s office as a relevant experience for a county judge role.

I want to continue the collaboration between county and city government, delivering results for our region,” Meza Gonzalez said Friday.

Meza Gonzalez appointed Melanie Tawil as her campaign treasurer, according to campaign finance documents filed with the county Monday. Tawil is CEO and co-owner of local tech company SwipeTrack Solutions and a real estate agent who currently serves as a VIA Metropolitan Transit board trustee.
