San Antonio and the military have a bond as old as the city itself. For nearly 300 years, San Antonio has been a home for hundreds of thousands of military personnel and their families, and more than 170,000 have chosen to retire here.
Today, Joint Base San Antonio, which includes Fort Sam Houston, Camp Bullis, Lackland, and Randolph, has an annual economic impact of more than $49 billion and provides both direct and indirect benefits to our community.
Every November since 1970, the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce has collaborated with community partners to publicly say “thank you” and show our appreciation for our military service men and women through “Celebrate America’s Military” (CAM). Over the course of three weeks, more than 35 events take place to recognize and honor our military here in the Alamo City.
CAM events range in size and scope from the annual wreath-laying at the Alamo and various receptions honoring our troops and veterans to golf tournaments and the JBSA Open House and Air Show. However, CAM’s signature event is the Chamber’s Spirit of America Dinner, which is an incredible evening and a chance to support and thank our active duty, Guard and Reserve, wounded warriors, and veterans for the sacrifices they have made for our country.
This year’s event, which will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, at the Marriott Rivercenter, will feature keynote speaker Taya Kyle, wife of the late U.S. Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle and the author of The New York Times-bestselling memoir American Wife. Taya Kyle serves as the executive director of the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation, which continues Chris Kyle’s legacy and sets itself apart by supporting first responder and military marriages. You can find a complete list of events at www.celebrateamericasmilitary.com.
The Chamber, along with the entire city of San Antonio, is proud to honor our military members of the past, present, and future. We hope you will join us to help commemorate another successful year of proudly claiming the title of Military City, USA.
