Deputy Police Chief Anthony Treviño will become San Antonio’s interim police chief on Jan. 1, 2015, the day after Police Chief William McManus is set to retire, City Manager Sheryl Sculley announced Friday.
“I’ve worked closely with Tony for the last four years. As my chief of staff he handled the bulk of the day-to-day operations,” McManus said at a press conference Friday afternoon. “He’s done a great job and if there is anybody to lead the department at the beginning of the new year, Tony is the guy to do it.”
Treviño, a San Antonio native, has more than 20 years of experience working with SAPD and has served as Deputy Chief since 2011.
“I have some huge shoes to fill. Chief McManus has done a tremendous job bringing our organization forward to where we are today,” Treviño said. “Even though it’s an interim role, I do not plan to sit on my hands idly and rest on our laurels as an organization. One of the fundamental things that we have to do … is serve our community and that service begins with individual actions by our officers in the field.”
Treviño led the implementation of the Patrol Resource Allocation Model (PRAM), which works to improve response times by analyzing population and crime data and redistributing resources. He previously served as head of Internal Affairs, supervised the department’s homicide unit, and co-chaired the Police Executive Research Forum Internal Affairs subcommittee to make policy changes within the department.
“I’m very excited that Chief Treviño will be taking on this responsibility. We have a lot of work in San Antonio and more than 1.4 million residents to serve and a surrounding community that also relies on mutual aid and service from our San Antonio Police Department,” said City Manager Sheryl Sculley.
McManus said Treviño was chosen for the interim position after much thought and discussion.
Treviño served the U.S. Air Force, has a masters in Public Administration from American Military University and a bachelors of science from Wayland Baptist University.
McManus is joining CPS Energy as senior director of security. He retires after 40 years of law enforcement service, nine years as SAPD’s chief.
“We are grateful to Chief McManus for his dedicated service to our City and congratulate him on his retirement,” Sculley said.

Appointment of a new police chief, including interim selections, requires approval by City Council. Treviño’s appointment will be voted on during A Session on Thursday, Dec. 11. A local and national search to hire a permanent successor to McManus will start in in January.
