The Harlandale Independent School District has opened applications for a seat on its school board to replace a trustee who resigned earlier this month after she was arrested.

Christine Carrillo resigned from the District 2 seat on Jan. 2 after being arrested for allegedly physically assaulting her husband during an incident on Christmas Eve. The board accepted her resignation Wednesday.

The application period began Jan. 12 and concludes on Jan. 26 at 4:30 p.m.

Candidates for the seat must include an application and a criminal history form, which can be found on the district website, and a personal resumé. Applications may be dropped off at 102 Genevieve Drive or emailed to Ricardo Hernandez, assistant superintendent of finance, at ricardo.hernandez@myhisd.net.

Under state law, Carrillo will technically remain on the board until her replacement is selected, according to a school district attorney who spoke during a board meeting Wednesday.

“While recent events involving one of our board members have raised concerns, our dedication to our students remain steadfast,” said Board President Ricardo Moreno before trustees voted to accept Carrillo’s resignation. “Rest assured the well-being and education of our children remain our top priority, and they will always come first, above all else.”

Applications will be reviewed on Jan. 31, with a special called meeting to interview and appoint a new board member tentatively scheduled for Feb. 1.

The seat will be up for election in May 2025.
