The time has finally come. After more than three years of planning, design and construction, Hemisfair will host a grand opening celebration for Yanaguana Garden the weekend of October 2-4.
Starting Friday evening, San Antonians can head to the park for music, food trucks, interactive art demonstrations, and other family events. The official ribbon cutting will be held on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. which will follow with day-long children activities. Sunday’s schedule includes activities related to art, education, and health.
Hemisfair Park Area Redevelopment Corporation (HPARC) will soon release a more specific schedule of events.
“This is a chance to throw a party to welcome San Antonio to the park,” said Drew Hicks, HPARC communications manager. “After that, the park is open for business.”
They won’t be open by October, but four local businesses will soon open in Yanaguana Garden including Paletería San Antonio, Con Safos, Revolucion Coffee + Juice, and San Antonio Brewing Company. Hicks said they will likely be open by end of the year or early 2016.
The $8 million Yanaguana Garden is a 4.1-acre area of land with an active play environment for children which includes climbing structures, swings, and a sand box. Entrance into the park is free and the hours of operation are from 7 a.m. to midnight daily, including the opening celebrations.
Yanaguana Garden is one of the three segments of Hemisfair Park, and the first to open. If all goes as planned, Civic Park will open in 2018 and Tower Park in 2020. In total, the three parks make up 37 acres of land in the heart of San Antonio’s urban core.
