We encourage residents and visitors to take pride in our city while enjoying a healthier and “greener” Fiesta experience this year. Recycling options, healthy food choices, smoke-free events and a variety of environmentally friendly transportation options will be available during the celebrations.

Most Fiesta events will feature recycling this year. City staff is working hard to support Fiesta event organizers in their sustainability efforts. Many Fiesta events have obtained the City’s “Green Event” certification under the City of San Antonio’s Green Events Ordinance, including the Fiesta Carnival at the Alamodome parking lot and the King William Fair. We encourage all Fiesta attendees to use the recycling receptacles in an effort to keep San Antonio looking its best.

Solid Waste Management staff and volunteers from the City of San Antonio and Keep San Antonio Beautiful will distribute yellow-mesh recycling bags during the Battle of Flowers and Fiesta Flambeau parades to collect recyclables. Blue recycling and brown garbage carts will be stationed at most street intersections along parade routes for attendees to conveniently dispose of items. Parade-goers who are seen utilizing the yellow-mesh bags correctly may receive a special recycling Fiesta medal for their efforts.

This year, food booths at many Fiesta events will offer healthier food choices, including delicious fruit cups and corn on the cob. We encourage Fiesta participants to utilize the city’s bikeshare program, B-Cycle, to get to and from Fiesta events. There are 55 B-Cycle stations throughout downtown San Antonio and bike racks at most events for those who pedal their own bikes from home.

Fiesta street and river parades continue to be smoke-free to ensure parade attendees enjoy festivities in a safe and healthy environment.

As one of San Antonio’s signature events, Fiesta San Antonio is an 11-day celebration attracting nearly 3.5 million visitors each year and featuring more than 100 events that boast music, food, sports, pageantry, military and patriotic observances, exhibits and parades. Fiesta 2015 takes place April 16-26.
