Bundle up for what constitutes winter in San Antonio (projected temperatures in the low 60s and high 50s) and celebrate the holiday season with snowball fights, Christmas singalongs and 250,000 lights during the epic Elf Movie Party at Travis Park this Saturday from 6-10 p.m. The highlight of the free weekend gathering in the park will be an outdoor screening of “Elf,” the Will Farrell Christmas classic, presented by Centro San Antonio and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema.
Alamo Drafthouse will kick off the festivities at 6 p.m. with a “Holiday Sing-Along.” Audience members can use fun props to be handed out in the park while singing holiday classics that include songs from Mariah Carey to The Beatles. Be sure to get an “Elfie” with Pat, Centro’s “Elf in the City,” who will be making an appearance for the event.
Event organizers encourage people to bring lawn chairs and blankets to ensure maximum coziness throughout the evening. On-site food trucks will feed your hunger, and a beverage booth from the St. Anthony’s Hotel will serve beer, wine and bubbly drinks. Food and drink are not free.
Keep an eye out for free Drafthouse props during the 7 p.m. screening of “Elf,” which will coordinate the props with scenes from the film.
“Historically, we’ve always done a winter event at Travis Park, but this is our first ELF event,” said Liz Burt, Centro’s events and marketing manager. “ It’s still family friendly, but it’s also a break from (grown-up chores) like wrapping presents or cleaning the house and getting ready for family.”
The area surrounding Travis Park will stay busy with glowing bicycle riders from Kickstand SA, tourists and holiday traffic, so attendees are encouraged to use the free VIA E-bus to get downtown. The E-bus and the event will be wheelchair-accessible.
