Road construction on the Zona Cultural project is moving forward, leading to lane closures, partial intersection closures and detours at two main intersections on César E. Chávez Boulevard through at least mid-November.
The intersections closing for road construction starting Monday, Oct. 2, include the intersection of West César E. Chávez Boulevard and Santa Rosa Avenue and the intersection of East César E. Chávez Boulevard and South Alamo Street on the south side of downtown.
César E. Chávez Boulevard will be closed to westbound and eastbound traffic at Santa Rosa Avenue until the end of November, while Santa Rosa Avenue will remain open for northbound to southbound traffic. Commutes through the area will include detours along Santa Rosa Avenue, West Nueva Street and South Flores Street.
The South Alamo Street and Cesar E. Chávez Boulevard intersection is closing in two phases, with the south side of the intersection closing first, then the north side.
South Alamo Street is closing to northbound and southbound traffic on César E. Chávez Boulevard for drainage construction until mid-November, the City of San Antonio said in a press release. César E. Chávez Boulevard will remain open to westbound and eastbound traffic, so those taking the detour route will have to go through César E. Chávez Blvd and onto St. Mary’s Street.
The closure will be detoured and shifted to the north side, utilizing one lane in each direction, and may last for three weeks or longer due to weather or unforeseen conditions, according to the city. Phase two of the South Alamo Street closure will close the north side of East César E. Chávez Blvd for two weeks. Traffic will be detoured and shifted to the south side of the street.
The city said signs will alert drivers of detour routes, and pedestrians will have access along existing sidewalks.
Closures on San Saba Road for sewer work continue from Dolorosa Street to Martin Street until August 2024, according to the city’s street closure report.
