One of the city’s cherished holiday season events is Ballet San Antonio’s rendition of The Nutcracker performed at the Tobin Center. Each performance features world-class professional dancers, local celebrities in select appearances, and a cast of more than 100 local children.

Auditions for children’s roles in this year’s performance are scheduled for Aug. 19 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Mexican Cultural Institute at Hemisfair Plaza. Registration is required to audition and may be completed ahead of time online, on the phone at (210) 223-8624, or on-site the day of the audition. Parties registering on-site are asked to arrive 30-45 minutes before the beginning of the tryouts.

Registration costs $20 through Friday, Aug. 4, and $25 thereafter. Cash, credit card, debit card, and check are all acceptable payment options. A 4-inch by 6-inch headshot of the child should accompany the registration processing fee.

Dancers aged 7-9 will audition at 12:30 p.m. and should have at least one to two years of experience, ages 10-12 audition at 2 p.m. and should have at least two to four years of experience, and ages 13 and older audition at 3 p.m. and should have more than three years of experience.

The selection of the dancers will be at the sole discretion of the artistic director and staff, according to Ballet San Antonio. The company states that evaluation is based on technique and artistry, and all casting decisions are final.
