CAST Tech, the highly anticipated new in-district charter high school in San Antonio ISD will being accepting applications for incoming 9th graders Jan. 3 through Mar. 10, 2017. The school will scale to grades 9-12 as the inaugural class of 150 students advances.
The new high school is a collaborative venture between SAISD and the business and tech communities. Renovations are underway on the Fox Tech High School campus, strategically located near the San Antonio Tech District. This will allow students to participate in internships and experiential learning opportunities with entrepreneurs and leaders in coding, cyber security, gaming and more.
CAST Tech is the first in a network of industry-led, career-themed high schools known collectively as CAST (Centers for Applied Science and Technology), and was made possible by a lead gift of $2.6 million from Charles Butt and an additional $1 million from H-E-B. The grocery chain and its philanthropist CEO plan to seek partnerships between businesses and school districts across the city to grow the network.
SAISD has named a principal for the new school as well. Kelly Flieger comes to SAISD from Alamo Colleges where she was a field supervisor for the Educator Preparation Program. Before Alamo Colleges, Flieger created DATA, the Design and Technology Academy magnet at Roosevelt High School (North East ISD). Founding the high performing magnet fostered Flieger’s love for tech education.
“Kelly brings over 20 years of educational leadership experience focused on building hands-on learning environments that stimulate creativity. We are confident that CAST Tech and its students will thrive under her leadership,” SAISD Superintendent Pedro Martinez said.
CAST Tech will host open house nights for interested families on the Fox Tech campus at 6:30 p.m. on Feb. 2, 22, and 27, 2017. Acceptance will be lottery based, with no academic requirements. Applications are available online.
