Bexar County is electing three members to the board that oversees the appraisal district — positions that have gained more attention as members in other counties used the positions to pursue controversial changes.

The board’s three elected positions are nonpartisan and serve primarily administrative roles.

Two years ago, however, conservatives in North Texas got elected and created new policies that dramatically changed Tarrant County’s appraisal process.

Now both parties have started lining up candidates to compete for these races, including Republicans and Democrats in Bexar County.

The elected positions were created during the 2023 Texas Legislative session to add transparency to the appraisal process.

They serve alongside a set of BCAD board members appointed by the taxing entities.

The three elected seats were put on the ballot for the first time in May of 2024, but they’re now up for reelection during the Nov. 3 midterm election — along with many higher-profile state, federal and countywide races.

Of the three inaugural members, just one, Erika Hizel (Place 2), is seeking reelection in a contested race.

Naomi Elizabeth Miller (Place 1) decided not to seek reelection, and Robert Bruce (Place 3) died before the end of his term. The board chose an interim replacement, Jon Melendez, who is running unopposed for a full term this year.

Early voting runs Oct. 19-30.
