The Southside Independent School District is once again offering the highest salary for entry-level teachers in the San Antonio area after approving a raise during a board meeting Wednesday night.

Teachers hired for the 2023-24 school year will make $61,777, according to a press release from the district. In addition, all teachers and professional staff currently working for the district will receive an increase of $2,642 and all auxiliary staff will receive an increase of $2,320.

“Our high salaries allow us to recruit and retain the best teachers in Texas,” Superintendent Rolando Ramirez said in a statement. “Our teachers are doing an excellent job educating our students and I think we should pay them their weight in gold.”

The new salary is an increase of $2,642, and comes as districts across the region compete for teachers amid a shortage.

This is the second year Southside ISD has offered the highest entry level salary, with many districts passing historic raises in recent weeks.

Judson Independent School District briefly unseated the district for that title in late June, after approving an entry-level salary of $60,264.

A record 6,000 Southside ISD students are expected to return to school on Aug. 14.
