Bexar County commissioners approved $7.3 million Tuesday for a new West Side trail connection between Culebra Road Trailhead and Grissom Road Trailhead.

Collen Brownlow, an engineer at the San Antonio River Authority, said construction of the 1.7 mile Culebra Creek trail extension is expected to begin in late 2024. It’s projected to be complete by late 2026.

The paved pedestrian and cyclist trail is part of the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trails System, which now measures more than 100 miles. It’s expected eventually to make a complete loop around San Antonio, but the largest remaining gaps are on the South and the West sides.

Commissioners green-lit two additional connecting segments in May that are also expected to be completed in 2026.
