At what has been called the “Oscars of Education,” two longtime San Antonio teachers recognized for a lifetime of work and dedication to education received $25,000 each. Their schools are getting like amounts, as well.
The 2019 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards took place Sunday night in Austin.
H-E-B officials recognized teachers at various career stages, principals, an early childhood organization, a school board, and a small and large district.
Last month, eight teachers and principals from San Antonio found out they were in the running for the overall prizes. On Sunday night, San Antonio Independent School District teacher Andrea Greimel and Northside ISD teacher Jodi Ramos won their categories.
Greimel, who recently received the Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching, is a bilingual teacher at SAISD’s Carvajal Early Childhood Education Center. She won H-E-B’s Lifetime Achievement Award for elementary teachers.
Ramos is an English language arts teacher at Stevenson Middle School in Northside ISD. She won the Lifetime Achievement Award for secondary teachers.
The Lifetime Achievement Awards recognize teachers with more than 20 years of experience. Both local winners will receive a personal award of $25,000 and a $25,000 grant for their campuses.
The awards also recognized Del Valle ISD, located near Austin, for its school board and Roma ISD, in South Texas, and Socorro ISD, near El Paso, for outstanding districts overall.
