My home of many years on San Antonio’s Northeast Side was exactly what I wanted, needed and loved. Then my 60s turned into my 70s and I realized I needed to get myself “settled.”
After a full year of investigating, I chose The Towers on Park Lane as my new home — a high-rise, park-edged community with 450 active and interesting neighbors living in 353 apartment homes.
And six years later, this independent, 55-and-over neighborhood is exactly what I want, need and enjoy every single day.
The Towers checked every box on my demanding list for a “last move” home — and still does! For one thing, I have equity as an owner/resident with a voice in the governance and operations. No rent, no corporate dictates. (Although a limited number of rental units are available.) As a residential cooperative, The Towers’ owner-residents are our own corporation, directed by a board of fellow owners we elect.

Our 25-story neighborhood looms over a gorgeous pocket park (and the Bel Meade subdivision beyond) that’s just perfect for private and pleasant strolls. The views from every floor provide inspiring, 360-degree options depending on height and direction. Those who live in the upper, north-facing homes can see the beginning of the Hill Country, while those who face south have a dramatic view of the downtown skyline.

For another, two restaurants (one a casual deli, the other with exquisite food and top-flight service) are available seven days a week without a meal plan. And the amenities easily top anything I found in my year-long search through San Antonio’s myriad of “senior” living options. From the fully-staffed concierge service to the 24-hour safety office to the well-equipped gym and trainer-led exercise classes to the huge indoor pool and professional housekeeping, The Towers lives up to its reputation as a “stationary cruise ship.” With more than 50 activities and events every week, it’s hard to get bored!
The fact The Towers offers so many choices is perhaps its most attractive feature to me. Want privacy? Just shut the door to your home and you have it. Want conversation or competition or music or entertainment? Just pour a cup of coffee, find a game table, join friends at the bar-with-a-view on the 22nd floor or hit the dance floor downstairs. Want to remodel to make your home YOUR home? Just do it.

Nestled between Fort Sam Houston, Terrell Hills and Alamo Heights, The Towers neighborhood on Harry Wurzbach Road is a winner for someone like me who’s lived and shopped more than 50 years on the Northeast Side.
But the biggest plus The Towers offers is the people. My neighbors are a fascinating, diverse group who appreciate the exceptional community we share (and jointly own). They keep me smiling and on my toes! And our 75-plus staff members add to the strong neighborhood feel at The Towers. An amazingly low staff turnover rate speaks to the quality of our management and professionalism of every associate.
