The Where I Live series aims to showcase our diverse city and region by spotlighting its many vibrant neighborhoods. Each week a local resident invites us over and lets us in on what makes their neighborhood special. Have we been to your neighborhood yet? Get in touch to share your story. If your story is selected and published, you will receive a $250 stipend.
Living in Fox Grove, a quiet neighborhood on the Northside of San Antonio, has been one of the best parts of my twenties so far. It strikes the perfect balance between suburban calm and easy access to everything I need — whether I’m heading to the gym, grabbing a bite, or just going for a peaceful walk. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you can slow down and chill, but still stay plugged into the energy of the city.
The neighborhood itself is super clean and well-kept, with tree-lined streets, friendly neighbors, and houses that feel modern without being over-the-top. There’s a mix of families, young professionals, and older couples here, which gives the area a good vibe — diverse, but still tight-knit.

One of my favorite things about Fox Grove is the amenities. There’s a community swimming pool, which is perfect during those brutal Texas summers, and a basketball court where you’ll always find a few people shooting around in the evenings. I’m no LeBron, but it’s a great way to stay active and connect with others in the neighborhood.
When I’m not hanging out in the neighborhood, there’s a ton to do just a short drive away. For food, one of my go-to spots is San Poke, which is right off 281. It’s a low-key poke bowl spot that never disappoints. It’s fresh, affordable, and honestly one of the healthier options in the area — especially if you’re like me and trying to eat clean. Their spicy tuna bowl with seaweed salad is my default order.
If I’m feeling like burning off the poke bowl, Planet Fitness is right nearby too. It’s not fancy, but it gets the job done. The best part? It’s open 24 hours, so I can sneak in a late-night workout when the gym is empty and I don’t feel like being social. It’s perfect for getting in that solo grind, whether it’s lifting weights, hitting the treadmill, or just unwinding in the massage chairs afterward.

Gold Canyon Park is an underrated spot. It’s about a 10-minute drive, and it’s great for when I want to get outside and clear my head. The trails there are peaceful, and since it’s tucked away a bit, it’s rarely crowded. I’ll usually bring my headphones, throw on a podcast or playlist, and just walk the loop for a while. It’s the perfect reset after a long day or when I just need a break from screens and noise.
One thing that makes Fox Grove stand out is how conveniently located it is. You can get to Loop 1604 in minutes, which means getting anywhere in San Antonio is pretty easy. Whether it’s going downtown for First Friday, hitting La Cantera for shopping, or even heading to the airport, the location is super central. But when you’re back home, it still feels quiet and laid-back, like you’re away from the chaos.
At 24, I’m not quite in “settle down and start a family” mode, but Fox Grove definitely feels like the kind of place I could see myself sticking around for a while. It’s affordable, safe, and gives me access to the things I care about — community, nature, food, fitness, and chill vibes. Plus, the houses here are surprisingly spacious, and with how the market’s been going, it feels like a smart move to get in now before prices go up even more.
All in all, Fox Grove is a hidden gem in San Antonio. It might not be as flashy as some of the newer developments, but it’s got character, convenience, and a solid community. For me, that’s more than enough.
