Early voting kicks off Tuesday for an incredibly important election in San Antonio.
The city is choosing its first new mayor in eight years, and all 10 City Council seats will also be on the ballot. Remember, thanks to new, longer council terms, this is San Antonio’s last city election until 2029.

What can I expect to see on my ballot?
You can check your voter registration status and download a copy of your personal sample ballot here. Once you’re in the voting booth, only paper notes are allowed — phones and tablets are prohibited.
Candidates will be listed in their randomly assigned ballot order, with no indication of incumbent status or party affiliation.
When is election day?
Election day will be Saturday, May 3, with polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Bexar County voters can choose from any location on this much longer list of election day polling sites. The deadline to register to vote in the May 3 election was April 3.
When is the runoff election?
Perhaps an even more important date to note in this election is June 7, when the runoff election will be held if no candidate takes at least 50% of the vote in the May election. Register to vote by May 8 to vote in the runoff election.
A runoff is extremely likely in the mayor’s race, where 27 candidates are running to succeed Mayor Ron Nirenberg, who is termed out after eight years in the role.
Crowded City Council races are also shaping up in a number of districts, including four races with no incumbent on the ballot in District 4, District 6, District 8 and District 9. In District 1, where first-term Councilwoman Sukh Kaur (D1) is seeking reelection, there are 10 candidates running.
Council races will also be decided in a June 7 runoff if no candidate takes at least 50% of the vote in May.
