A revolutionary technology for people with cataracts is now available in San Antonio. The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) from RxSight uses a special lens material designed by a Nobel Prize-winning scientist, giving cataract patients the possibility to refine their vision through postoperative adjustments. This procedure is exclusively available in San Antonio at Focal Point Vision, the only San Antonio ophthalmology practice selected to offer this procedure. It’s one of only six practices in the United States that offers this innovative operation.
A new clinical study has shown that patients who received the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens achieved uncorrected vision of 20/20 or better at six months postoperatively at approximately twice the rate of patients receiving a standard cataract lens. A Focal Point Vision patient, Butch Cox, underwent the surgery recently, and said, “I am always a bit skeptical of new technology promises, but after the eye surgery, my vision was amazing. … I now see 20/20.”
The Light Adjustable Lens technology works by incorporating an interactive refraction process, and the power to optimize the implanted intraocular lens (IOL) based on the patient’s visual preference. What this means is that patients are able to “try out” different vision scenarios according to their needs with their ophthalmologist, who can adjust the lens postoperatively to optimize a patient’s vision.
“RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the biggest improvement in cataract surgery in my career,” said Dr. James Lehmann of Focal Point Vision. “It allows surgeons to customize the vision of the patient after surgery with a noninvasive light treatment. We can now deliver the highest level of vision to our patients, tailored to their needs.”
For Cox, this procedure was the right decision.
“I’ve worn glasses since I was 9 years old. I’ve always had very poor vision,” he said. “After discussing my options with Dr. [Kenneth] Maverick at Focal Point Vision, he recommended the LAL cataract procedure.”
Patients who undergo the procedure begin with all laser (bladeless) cataract surgery along with the implantation of the LAL implant, then the procedure will be repeated in the other eye if needed a few days later. After a couple of weeks, patients will follow up for at least two adjustments for their vision, which is the process that sets the RxSight Light Adjustable Lens apart from any other available cataract treatment technology.
Doctors work with patients to make adjustments using the Light Delivery Device (LDD), giving patients the opportunity to personalize their vision needs. This process led to positive results for Cox.
”I now have amazing vision at night, just unbelievable for someone who previously could not drive at night,” he said. “It’s improved my quality of life.”
Focal Point Vision is an ophthalmology group led by Maverick and Lehmann, whose innovation and expertise has earned the practice international acclaim. Focal Point Vision has been a leader in eye surgery serving South Texas for more than half a century, which is why it is the only local ophthalmology practice chosen to perform the new state-of-the-art cataract surgery using RxSight’s Light Adjustable Lens technology. In addition to this service, the practice performs complex eye surgery, including LASIK, corneal transplants, and cataract surgery.
The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens technology is the future of cataract treatment, and it is solely available in San Antonio at Focal Point Vision. To learn more or to book a consultation, visit https://focalpointvision.com/.
