Fire pits that sent the mouth-watering aroma of smoked brisket and pork across parts of the Pearl for the last seven years are about to be extinguished.
Pearl officials and Chef Tim Rattray announced Monday that The Granary, a barbecue restaurant operating in the historic home of former brewery owner Emma Koehler, will close at the end of November.
Rattray is closing The Granary in order to focus on his recently opened Fontaine’s Southern Diner & Bar, located at 906 E. Elmira St., and possible future concepts. The Fontaine’s menu is inspired by Southern cuisine and Rattray’s own family recipes, from eggs with biscuits to chicken fried steak.
“It’s been such a privilege and labor of love to share what we’ve done over the years with this community all while maintaining a commitment to quality ingredients, innovative cooking, and creative exploration of smoke and fire,” Rattray stated.
One of numerous restaurants at the Pearl, the Granary opened in 2012 and soon after was named to Texas Monthly’s Top 50 Barbecue lists (in 2013 and 2017).
“We loved having Granary on the property for the last seven years and being part of the movement of modern Texas barbecue,” stated Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer of the Pearl. “We’re confident Chef Tim will continue to shine in his future endeavors.”
The foodie destination that is the Pearl has seen some of its initial restaurants and retail stores close in recent years. Celebrated local Chef Andrew Weissman closed the Sandbar Fish House & Market in 2016, then Il Sogno Osteria in May 2018. The cocina store, Melissa Guerra, closed in September 2017.
For one last farewell to menu items such as pastrami short rib with sauerkraut aioli and rye crumble, brisket ramen with onsen egg and grilled Maitake mushrooms, or dry-aged Flannery stake and Texas toast, The Granary will remain open with regular hours until Sunday, Nov. 10.
After that date, it will open only for dinner (4 p.m. to 10 p.m.) Tuesday through Saturday and lunch (11 a.m. to 3 p.m.) on Fridays and Saturdays.
The restaurant’s final day of operation is Nov. 30.
