Between the rush for the perfect present and the scramble for holiday deals, it’s worth pausing to remember that some of the most meaningful gifts aren’t things at all — they’re the moments of change your generosity makes possible.
Every gift to a local nonprofit tells a story of these moments: a rescued dog finding a forever home, a family sharing a warm meal they weren’t sure they’d have, a high school senior opening the acceptance letter they never thought would come. Across the San Antonio area, moments like these unfold every day, adding up to a year defined by a generous community spirit.
That spirit is the heart behind Gifts that Give Back, the San Antonio Area Foundation’s inaugural Holiday Giving Guide. Newly launched in print and online, this curated collection spotlights 28 nonprofits making measurable impact across Bexar and surrounding counties. Each organization is eligible to unlock an additional $3,000 in support this season to fortify critical programs during a time of rising demand and funding uncertainty.
“The guide reflects what community foundations do best: connecting people who care with the causes that matter most,” said Nadege Souvenir, CEO of the San Antonio Area Foundation. “Every section of ‘Gifts that Give Back’ offers a chance to see hope in action this season, and to be part of the good that’s happening all around us.”
Organized across the Area Foundation’s four impact areas — Cultural Vibrancy, Livable and Resilient Communities, Successful Aging, and Youth Success — the guide also includes opportunities to support animal services, student scholarships and local journalism.
“We wanted to make giving both easy and meaningful,” said Lisa Brunsvold, chief development officer for the Area Foundation. “Whether you’re recommending a grant through your donor-advised fund or making a direct gift, this guide helps every donor see where their dollars can do the most good.”
Nonprofits feel the impact immediately.
“Community giving during the holidays helps us do more for those in need,” said Vinsen Faris, CEO of Meals on Wheels San Antonio. “Meals on Wheels being featured alongside other great members of the nonprofit community is a win for all of us, as it highlights the urgent and important work we all do to make our community better.”
Families can give any amount to nonprofits that reflect their values, hopes and traditions. Make a tribute gift in honor of a loved one, remember a family member or beloved pet or celebrate a team or milestone. These expressions of gratitude become powerful ways to invest in the organizations that strengthen our community.
This holiday season, choose the gift that lasts long after the wrapping comes off. Gifts that Give Back: 28 nonprofits, $3,000 each, one community — and countless stories of hope that you make possible.
