Mercado was born addicted to heroin and battled a severe addiction for more than four decades, before seeking recovery six months ago. He shares that his life was saved by someone who administered Narcan to him when he was overdosing.

A packet of pork chops that her sister bought for her family thaws on the counter top, which Medina will prepare for dinner later. Lissette Medina uses $1,000 in food stamps and the social security checks she gets for two of her disabled daughters to feed and take care of her family of six every month. Medina says that some months the food stamps run out and the fridge is empty for a few days before she can go shopping again.
