As a small, nonprofit newsroom, San Antonio Report journalists work hard every day to cover local issues as comprehensively as possible. However, we sometimes complement our regular coverage with thoughtful commentaries that could not be accomplished by our newsroom through our standard editorial practice.

Newsmakers, city and county officials, business professionals, academics, activists and community members with a unique viewpoint or personal experience are welcome to get in touch with our newsroom to be considered for publication.

Commentaries must be:

  • Locally focused on San Antonio or Bexar County
  • Intended to inform, persuade or offer solutions on a topic currently in the news
  • Fact-based, with cited and verifiable information from reputable sources
  • Fully fleshed out, without any obvious holes or counter-arguments that are not considered
  • Edited for content, grammar and consistency in accordance with Associated Press and San Antonio Report style
  • 500-1,000 words
  • Exclusive to the San Antonio Report

They must not be:

  • Written with the assistance of artificial intelligence
  • Derived from any existing published work without proper attribution
  • On a topic we’ve recently published another commentary on, except in the case of a point-counterpoint
  • Promoting a business or otherwise intended for financial gain
  • Contain inappropriate content or hate speech

The San Antonio Report may refuse publication of any content that undermines the integrity of its brand. Note that we are a nonprofit, nonpartisan news outlet and cannot accept commentaries from candidates for political office, those actively working on campaigns or from others endorsing candidates for office.

Some commentary submissions may be held until a counterpoint piece has been written to run with it.

Publication is not guaranteed. Our community engagement editor, Morgan Severson, works closely with writers to make sure their proposed commentaries meet these guidelines. Please email her at morgan@sareport.org to pitch a commentary for publication.

We also welcome submissions for our weekly Where I Live series. Unlike commentaries, Where I Live submissions are eligible for a $250 stipend if accepted and published.

Articles promoting businesses or events should be sent to our business team for consideration for publication as a Sponsored Post — standard rates apply. To submit a press release for possible news coverage, email hello@sareport.org.
