During November’s National Veterans and Military Families Month, I Care San Antonio, our community’s leading charity vision center, will host its third annual O’Dark Thirty Breakfast with special guest keynote speaker David Cook, a former “mental training coach” for the San Antonio Spurs.
Cook, a peak performance coach in the field of Sport and Performance Psychology, is also the best-selling author of Seven Days in Utopia: Golf’s Sacred Journey, which was made into a major motion picture starring Academy Award winners Robert Duvall and Melissa Leo.
He will be joined by three highly respected veteran co-chairs: retired Air Force Col. Dr. Thomas M. McNish, retired Air Force Command Chief Master Sgt. Otis L. Scott Jr. and retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Dr. Byron C. Hepburn.
The event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 17, and will support one of I Care SA’s most important initiatives, the All-Star Eye Care Program for Veterans and their Families, which helps low income and homeless U.S. military veterans and their immediate families access the complete eye care they need. This year’s O’Dark Thirty Breakfast is expected to sell out by Oct. 1, so get your sponsorships in now.
I Care SA is thrilled to have Cook as this year’s keynote speaker. He worked with the San Antonio Spurs from 1996-2004, a period that included two NBA championships. In addition to the Spurs, Cook has coached innumerable athletes across the PGA, NBA, NFL, MLB, Olympics and the collegiate national championship ranks.
As the keynote speaker, Cook will share incredible stories from his varied experience of working with some of today’s top athletes. His testimonies of how he helped athletes reach their peak performance will surely inspire those in attendance to reach their full potential when it matters most, whether that’s in sports, business or life.
Cook has stepped out of the limelight recently, taking on fewer speaking engagements. However, he was moved by the heart of I Care SA’s mission — to improve lives by providing complete eye care to those who cannot afford it — and is excited to participate.
“I am looking forward to returning to San Antonio and speaking at the O’Dark Thirty Breakfast,” he said. “It will be great to share some intimate Spurs stories that are relevant to the message for the morning. What an honor and privilege to stand before so many heroes to this mission and encourage you all as you pursue greatness for a cause.”

I Care San Antonio’s Vision Center is the only charity eye clinic in the United States managed by volunteer doctors that provides such a high level and extensive amount of care. The organization is fortunate to have such an incredible group of 40 ophthalmologists and optometrists dedicated to providing compassionate care for the vulnerable of Central and South Texas.
Every year, I Care SA gives essential eye care to thousands of low income and homeless individuals that could not have received care elsewhere. Since their inception in 1992, they’ve cared for over 57,000 patients, and the amount of charity eye care they are able to give back to the community is only growing, with a total value of donated care at over $13.5 million.
