By the end of this week, far more will be known about San Antonio’s highly-anticipated mayoral race than in the past six months.
The first campaign to replace term-limited Mayor Ron Nirenberg launched nearly a year ago, and since then, a total of 19 candidates have filed a treasurer’s report to allow them to start raising money.
It’s the city’s first open mayoral race in 16 years, and the winner will serve a four-year term, thanks to changes voters approved in November.
On Wednesday, campaign finance reports covering July 1 through Dec. 31 are due, offering the first look at mayoral candidates’ and City Council hopefuls’ war chests since last summer.
Political consultants put the price of a high-functioning mayoral campaign at about $400,000 — an amount they say allows the candidate to identify potential supporters and target them across various platforms online.
Last year City Council voted to cancel its quarterly reports, so the most recent fundraising glimpse occurred in mid July — before Councilwomen Adriana Rocha Garcia (D4) and Melissa Cabello Havrda (D6), former Air Force Under Secretary Gina Ortiz Jones, former Councilman Clayton Perry, former Texas Secretary of State Rolando Pablos and many others had launched their campaigns.
At the time, tech entrepreneur Beto Altamirano and Councilman Manny Pelaez (D8) led the pack with hauls of $62,000 and $47,000 respectively.
Also on Wednesday, the race will cross another big milestone when filing opens, allowing candidates to formally register to appear on the May 3 ballot.
The filing period closes Feb. 14, so candidates who haven’t raised the money to be competitive still have time to change their minds before the field is set.
