Saturday marks the official start of pool season with outdoor public pools reopening as temperatures in San Antonio approach the triple digits. 

Twenty-four free pools will open six days a week, some with extended hours, according to the city’s Parks and Recreation Department

Pool hours are being extended by one hour each day from pre-pool season, which started in May, with earlier swim times at select locations. 

Tuesday-Sunday

The Elmendorf, Kingsborough, Lincoln, Southcross and Woodlawn Lake pools will be open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. For earlier swim times, visit the Woodlawn Lake from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. for lap swims, and the Sunset Hills pool, open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Sunset Hills Pool is also closed on Mondays.

Wednesday-Monday

The Kennedy, Monterrey, San Pedro Springs, Ward and Westwood pools will open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday to Monday. The Lady Bird Johnson pool will open earlier from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will close on Tuesdays.

Thursday-Tuesday

The Cassiano, Dellview, Fairchild, Heritage and South Side Lions pools will open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Tuesday. For earlier swim times, visit the Cuellar Pool which opens 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, except for Wednesdays when it’s closed. 

Friday-Wednesday

Concepcion, Garza, New Territories, Roosevelt and Spring Time pools will open daily from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday through Wednesday. The Normoyle Pool is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and also closed on Thursdays.

The city will have an extended pool season this year, said a Parks and Recreation spokeswoman, with a schedule to be released near the end of the regular season. The city’s indoor Natatorium is closed for renovations this summer, the city said.

During free community swim days, San Antonio families have more options to splash at; Open swim is available now at the YWCA at 503 Castroville Rd. from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The YWCA also offers lap swimming and water walking from 10 a.m. to noon, and water aerobics from noon to 1 p.m. during the same weekdays. 

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, hit the North East ISD Sports Park Pool at 12001 Wetmore St. from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. until July 18. 

The Southwest ISD Aquatic Center will also welcome San Antonio families on Fridays through Aug. 2, from noon to 4 p.m. at its pool at 9290 SW Loop 410. 

Starting June 25 through Aug. 8, the Thousand Oaks Family YWCA will also welcome residents to its pool at 16103 Henderson Pass from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. On June 29, it will open Saturday swim days from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. through Aug. 10. 

And the city’s splash pads are open through the summer, including at Benavides Park at 1500 Saltillo St., Elmendorf Lake Park at 3700 W. Commerce St., Hemisfair at 434 S. Alamo St., Joe Ward Park at 435 E. Sunshine Dr., Lincoln Park at 2915 E. Commerce St., Martin Luther King Park at 3503 Martin Luther King Dr., and at Pearsall Park at 5102 Old Pearsall Rd. 

Know before you go

  • Proper swimming attire is required to enter swimming pools: polyester, lycra or spandex shirts designed for protection from sun exposure are permitted, but cotton clothing like t-shirts and denim is not permitted.
  • If your child wears diapers, diapers designed for swimming are required
  • Inflatable toys, like arm floats, aren’t permitted, but lifesaving vests may be worn.
  • Coolers under 16 quarts are permitted, and water and fruit are the only food items allowed into the pool area. No glass containers are allowed.
