Freezing rain and temperatures in the 20s across San Antonio Monday morning prompted the cancellation of the 2024 Martin Luther King Jr. March and Celebration.

Officials on Sunday delayed the start time of the march because of expected precipitation amid frigid temperatures. The march, originally slated to start at 10 a.m. on the city’s East Side, was to instead take place at 11 a.m.

But less than five hours before the event was to begin, the City of San Antonio and the Martin Luther King Jr. Commission announced the event’s cancellation “for the safety of all participants.“

“San Antonio began experiencing freezing precipitation overnight, forcing road closures throughout the region,” officials said in statement. “If you must travel, plan accordingly and drive with caution.”

Icy bridges and overpasses caused multiple crashes across downtown and Southeast San Antonio Monday morning, including at Loop 410 at WW White, Loop 410 South at Sinclair Road, Interstate 37 North at Hackberry and at I-35 at I-37 South, according to KSAT

The National Weather Service San Antonio area forecasted dustings of light snow grains or frozen drizzle and a light glaze of ice on roads Monday morning.

San Antonio’s MLK march is one of the largest in the nation, drawing tens of thousands annually. It returned to the city’s streets in 2023 after being held virtually in 2021 and 2022.
